10 ways in-fact.

Well, here they are – 10 huge benefits of running and why you should be doing it.

1 – WEIGHT LOSS AND CONTROL
Running burns calories in abundance and keeps on burning long after your run has finished (after-burn)
The more you run the run more you burn, and the beauty is you don’t have to be little Miss or Mr speedy pants to reap the calorie burn. Slow and steady burns just as many calories as a running gazelle.

2 – INCREASES CONFIDENCE
Running is a feel-good factor exercise and releases the good old endorphins.
Runners high is a real thing. Once you have a taste of it you want to go back for more.
So the more you run, the more in control you are of not only your body but your life – it’s a real feel-good factor.

3 – GOOD MENTAL HEALTH
Did I mention the happy endorphins?
Not only do they make us feel happy and good about ourselves they also makes our brains feel happy and good too.

4 – A GREAT STRESS BUSTER
Living in the twenty-first century is hard work and quite frankly stressful and we all need a little bit of me-time.
The beauty of running is it’s free and can be done as and when needed and running helps pump up the serotonin levels.
Serotonin is a super body chemical, not only does is boost your digestive system, keeps your memory sharp and helps keep your hormones and mood in good balance but it also helps you sleep better as well as being an aphrodisiac.

5 – STRONG LUNGS
Being a runner you won’t need a balloon pump to pump your kids birthday balloons, you can use your super-strong lungs.
Running requires a lot of air which means a lot of lung action – as with the legs when we run, they get stronger so do the lungs.

6 – STRONG LEGS
You will have calves that will make Arnold Schwarzenegger proud.
When you run you use every muscle in your legs and over time they get stronger and stronger.
Not only will you look great in a pair of skinny jeans – men included, but that mountain walk will feel like a doddle.

7 – STRONG BONES
Just like making your muscles stronger, running also helps keep your bones strong.
When the bones are under stress, and running stresses the bones, all the essential minerals that the bones need are sent to the stressed bones to replace the lost minerals and to help repair and strengthen them against more stresses.
In-fact it’s thought that running can help with bone density issues such as osteoporosis.

8 – REDUCES HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.
When we run and take in more oxygen and our arteries contract and expand helping flush through more blood and oxygen, keeping our arteries nice and healthy thus enabling more blood and oxygen flow freely.

9 – BOOSTS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Even just light running can have a huge impact on your health and immune system.
When we run our immune system circulates protective cells through our body a lot faster to help kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

10 – STRONGER AND MORE FLEXIBLE JOINTS
Running, in particular, trail running will help strengthen and stabilise your ankles, knees, and hips.
Not just that, but running also strengthens your tendons and ligaments too, making your legs even more awesome.

And this is why everyone should be running.

I’d also suggest that all these health benefits become greater as you get older – certainly more noticeable compared to my own age group generally.
