  • Lack of O2 definitely in the air atm. Lovely looking long run Emma, and nice to spend niece time 🙂

  • Nice looking structure to the run, 2 miles in each, z5 must have been a killer, especially how muggy it is. Stron 8 and I do see how you do focus and not look at the flowers in the hedgerows!
I think my z4 pace will be way slower, and therefore feel easier… will have to try out a mile in each zone soon and see what each one feels like.

@ian_spriggs obviously I need to concentrate on my running more!
The book sounds good. Hoping the Ben Lawers group is flatter than the rest 😂

  • @ian_spriggs my z2 goes from 131-145. What I find is that if I drift off (daydream) my pace must naturally quicken, or slow down, and the HR moves out of zone. The uneven muddy field didn’t help. I am going to persevere though, especially with rec runs and long runs.

@amanda I did think tha if you only run in z2 your body forgets to move a bit quicker! You’ve done some excellent big miles too 💪

@sharnie1 thanks for the HR advice, did think there should be some z3 and z4 runs.
The event is swim, run/walk, kayak and bike. I’ve always wanted to do canoeing but because of my ears and fear of causing (drowning) I’ve never done it. I’m now practising swimming underwater. I know it’s not the same as capsizing, but I can do it and I’m not…[Read more]

@lizzy the swim is 0.8 miles, so I should be able to do that. Bit worried as the lake maybe quite deep and cold. As for the compass, need to know how to use one before 😂

  • JillyMP commented on the run 1 day, 7 hours ago

@ruthmc , not an ultra, it’s only 15 miles, but it’s over 7 Munros in the Ben Lawers Range. It’s a walk/ run AND not until next summer (2020), so I’ll probably be over prepared (or forget to register!) Need to be able to use a compass and a map, so will be learning new skills. There are other elements to the day, it’s not an easy challenge but…[Read more]

Think I may emigrate down south, not that I’m very up north by any stretch of imagination, here it’s just muggy and greyish. All looking good Ruth, and fitness improving too. Excited to see what event you’re doing 🙂

Dog jog keeping to HR zone 2
Put the wrist slapper on to keep me in the zone, managed ok, 81% z2 and only 3% z3, the rest in z1. It is surprisingly hard trying to keep it where it should be, and I’m not sure if it’s any easier than moving a bit quicker, but will persevere.
Salsa loves this pace, she has time to appreciate her surroundings and…[Read more]

    • A good 3 miles Jilly – don’t know much about HR zones, but think that it will be good for you as stops too much higher intensity work, I think. Q why are you running with a backpack? Have you an ultra in mind?

    • A great 3 Jilly with a lovely photo of poppies. Cannot comment on HRZs I am afraid….most of my runs are the same pace 😫

    • @ruthmc , not an ultra, it’s only 15 miles, but it’s over 7 Munros in the Ben Lawers Range. • Sounds like a lovely relaxed outing Jilly and nice views of the poppies too 🙂 I tend to do the majority of my runs at an equivalent of zone 2 running ie under 75% max hr as you can get a lot of miles done without increasing your risk of injury. When my mara plan starts next week, I’ll be doing one run at tempo pace or hillwork, one run at a…[Read more]

    • What a lovely photo of the poppies. I’m like Barry in that I don’t train to HR, and tend not to think the wrist slappers are accurate enough if you really want to train to them. I have been gauging the minutes/mile more lately, and trying to rope it back when I see it creeping up towards the too fast stage; which I guess would also be reflected in…[Read more]

    • Lovely pic Jilly and a nice outing. The event sounds fab too.

    • Lovely photo jilly and the challenge sounds exciting for you and Jenny. How far is the swim and is the navigation part of the challenge or do you need to learn before the day? i havent a clue on walking maps, road yeah but compass and a map, wouldnt have a clue?
As for keeping your HR in Z2 im no expert at all but i would imagine you will have to…[Read more]

    • Sounds a lovely run with Salsa, I assume the mud doesn’t bother her LoL I have no idea about HR but from what I can see your running is great 🙂

    • Nicely disciplined, Jilly. A pace for you and Salsa to enjoy the scenery. The poppy fields are just glorious at the moment, aren’t they? Or at least, ours were … they’ve not coped with the recent bucketing rain … Shame, but they don’t last forever, do they?

    • a nice and steady doggy run, well done on keeping HR in the zone so effectively

    • Love the pic, stunning 😊😊 and a great dog jog 👍 Z2 is for steadies and rec runs Jilly, long runs should be mostly Z2 with the hills in Z3, (or a tempo section in the middle) then you should add a Z4 tempo type outing or some inters?? The long runs in Z2 really improve the pace of Z2 though. (Since I’m ultra training I spend a lot of my runs in…[Read more]

    • Ooh and that sounds a fab event – is it a swim run like the Breca ones??

    • Ian S replied 1 day ago

I’m not sure I fully agree on the difficult to keep HR steady. With my Z2 it goes from 136 to 151. So if I’ve got a Z2 run to do i try to keep it in the middle, so, 143. Once at 143, if it goes higher, slow down, if it goes lower, speed up. HR is very responsive .
Think your choice of route probably had lots to do with it as its definitely easier…[Read more]

    • You had a great week last week Jilly lots of lovely miles. I try and keep most of my miles in z2 except tempo, I’ve also being adding in z3 to some of the short runs just for a bit of a change though

    • Nice miles there, Jilly! I’m sure Salsa has been enjoying this pace… And what a marvelous scenery, just wow!

    • That’s where we differ, I never daydream, from 1st step to the last step I’m concentrating on the HR. My job is to stick to the required HR only. Nothing takes my mind of what I’m doing. Which is probably why I never notice things around me.
Incidentally, book I’m reading at present is about someone bagging munros and current chapter is the Ben…[Read more]

    • Exciting new challenge in the pipeline Jilly, looks like you have all the answers you ever need on HR just as well because I would be no use whatsoever 😆 photo is awesome and a fab trot out with the woof 👍👍

    • Nice 3 and lovely miles

    • That sounds like a cracking challenge and definitely something positive for you both to focus on. I’m no expert on anything so I’m keeping out of the techie stuff 😁

    • Jilly not too far then but the deep water is not my bag, so really good on you for training for it. OH to the navigations skills, can teach me one you know? 😊

    • Wow! That’s a really exciting and challenging plan, Jilly. I love the wide open spaces of Perthshire. (Climbed the pointy one – Schiehallion – on last year’s hols.) Good luck with the plan.

    • nice going Jilly

    • Great stuff Jilly, and a smashing pic. I love the fact its ‘only’ 15 miles over 7 Munro’s .. ha ha that’s going to be epic.

Fast 6 splits in the heat Ian, well done 🙂

  • JillyMP commented on the run 2 days, 7 hours ago

Sauna, hot tub… sounds like a spa day! Soooo hot out, exercising is hard today. Nice looking jeffing session Ruth, all seems to be going very well, hope the hot tub doesn’t feel too hot 🙂

    I’ve just Googled… 215 miles!!!!!!!!!! Omg…..

  • JillyMP commented on the run 2 days, 7 hours ago

@sharnie1 – question, so when HR training, or any running, you always ignore what your HR is with the first mile?

  • JillyMP commented on the run 2 days, 7 hours ago

Race across Scotland, so this is next on the agenda!!! Googling…
Good z2 miles Sharnie, and sounds like a nice riverside route 🙂

  • JillyMP commented on the run 2 days, 9 hours ago

Hitting the pace with a bit to spare Emma, I find pacing really tough, if I have the wrist slapper on it’s constant up and down! Did a good job though and yes, it’s so stuffy out!

  • JillyMP commented on the run 2 days, 9 hours ago

I do like a cheat’s progression, I actually like a downhill tempo, but what goes down must go up, and whatever way you look at it, your HR is pretty impressive downhill or not. It’s inspirational especially after yesterday. Perhaps I should look into it more seriously?
Anyway, as for the Meldrew comments, fair enough. Do sort of agree when…[Read more]

Catching up Rachel, and scrolling back a bit. Pleased Misty is ok, bless her 🙁 must have been such a worry.
Hope you’ve had a lovely holiday too, gorgeous places to visit. I love running in new places, but like you, do feel apprehensive in places I don’t know. Good run there 🙂

  • JillyMP commented on the run 2 days, 12 hours ago

There’s always a slower than slow and a faster than fast, and a progression is always a progression regardless. Very stuffy out mc, Salsa agrees that all the oxygen had been sucked out. A good 3 to start the week off 😀

  • JillyMP commented on the run 2 days, 12 hours ago

Early bird Fiona and nice plod too.
It is warm out, thought so at a civilised 8am on my dogwalk , but then I’m likely the same age as you, so perhaps everything is just hot! 😀
